A piece a little too big, an unexpected color, an unknown food ... this is your child who spits and pushes his plate. How to make the meals go better? The advice of Dr. Brigitte Boucher, nutritionist doctor,

The problem

As soon as you take out the mixed ham and mash, the meals turn into a nightmare!

Who disturbs it?

  • Your child. He feels your anxiety and he is grumpy ...
  • You. You are tense. These meals are exhausting!

You made a bad start ...

Let's go back a bit. "Normally", you should have begun diversification towards 4-6 months and offered your child soft foods: one by one for him to identify, first mixed, then mouliné before bringing him to discover the small pieces ... The feeding of the 12 months is the continuity of this learning which must be done with flexibility and respecting the innovation.

  • What has to be done. Reassure you. Your child can eat anything (almost), it's a big one! Go a little back if necessary, mix, mill, but maintain this golden rule: offer him a varied diet. He's sulking this vegetable? Offer him four, five, and even ten times if necessary, without insisting, without forcing ... he will end up loving him!
  • What to tell him. "You're great, you can taste lots of good things!"

To accept novelty, he must feel confident

At 1 year, your toddler is more sensitive to the environment than the food. Proof of this mashed cauliflower he spits with you ... and he enjoys with his nanny! It is only around 2 years that he will actually be wary of the food itself: a classic phenomenon called "neophobia".

  • What has to be done. Relax. If you are anxious, your child will apprehend the novelty. Offer the food with pleasure, curiosity and without prejudice: some children like the pronounced taste of Roquefort, others the acidity of lemon ... Put words on what you eat, on your feelings ... Install it often at the great table and "enjoy" with family.
  • What to tell him. "Look at the soup, I eat the same ... and I love it!"
